Biography
"Biography - a system in which the contradictions of a human life are unified." -- José Ortega y Gasset
Robert Kaercher hails from a small town in northwest Indiana. After graduating from Indiana University South Bend with a BA in Theater, with a concentration in Acting and Directing, he migrated to Chicago, Illinois, where he’s been working the “Off-Loop” theater scene for over 20 years.
Highlights of his Windy City theatrical career include the world premiere of Jim Henry’s The Angels of Lemnos (Eric, Officer Ferguson and Carruthers) at Chicago Dramatists; G.B. Shaw’s John Bull’s Other Island (Thomas Broadbent) with Irish Repertory of Chicago; the world premiere of George Brant’s Dick Danger: D.J. Crimesolver with Factory Theater; the Chicago premiere of Amy and David Sedaris’ The Book of Liz (Rev. Tollhouse, Visil, Duncan) with Roadworks Productions; the US premiere of Vasili Sigarev’s Black Milk with European Repertory Co.; as the silent film-era screen idol Francis X. Bushman in the world premiere of Paul Peditto’s Sounds of Silents (The Essanay Years) with Prop Thtr; the world premiere of Bonhoeffer's Cost (Hans von Dohnanyi), written by Tim Gregory and Mary Ruth Clarke, at Provision Theater; and more recently, productions of The Seven-Per-Cent Solution (Mycroft Holmes), the 30th anniversary production of Hauptmann, and Psmith, Journalist, all at City Lit Theater. It was Robert's great pleasure to play the role of Maurice Wilkins in the Chicago premiere of Anna Ziegler's Photograph 51 with 20% Theater last year.
Of his work in Irish Rep’s production of Shaw's John Bull’s Other Island, Chicago Tribune theater critic Richard Christiansen wrote, “As Broadbent, a perfect twit who nonetheless is throbbing with the Shavian Life Force, Robert Kaercher carries the play forward with inexhaustible bonhommie. He's a boob, as Shaw shows us, but, with Shaw, we can't help but enjoy him.”
Robert can also be briefly seen as "Corrections Officer #1" in Beverly Ridge Pictures' Chicago Overcoat, escorting Armand Assante through the cold dank halls of the old Joliet prison, which has aired on Showtime and is now available on DVD. He has also been seen in print hawking the American Express IN: CHICAGO card and in a regional television commercial for Cincinnati Bell. Most recently, he has a supporting role in the independent feature film Mercy's Girl, written and directed by Emily Lape for Three Stones Pictures.
Robert Kaercher continues to reside in Chicago with his lovely wife of 18 years and their always witty and charming 11-year-old son.
